Fugue: Variations on an Exhibition presents the creative, publishing, education and research projectsselected from the 2013 call for projects at the Sala d’Art Jove. The exhibition explores the idea that any collection of work can be read through many different layers, as well as art’s ability to be interpreted in multiple ways and the various forms in which the same series of pieces can be laid out. This publication continues this approach by putting forward five possible variations, viewing the exhibition as an area with a number of simultaneous vanishing lines.

In Fugue the exhibition extends beyond the exhibition space itself to take in other times and places through a series of activities. If the exhibition is an image that presents a very specific situation in a given time and place, the accompanying “off stage” activities explore and rethink the concept of an exhibition as a space that also requires another variation: on the medium itself understood a receptacle for art.
Fugue: Variations on an Exhibition marks the end of the 2013 programme at the Sala d’Art Jove. It was preceded by the project Antechamber: Notes for an Exhibition, which comprised a series of roundtables, screenings and interviews linked to the selected projects.

Fugue: Variations on an Exhibition forms part of FAQ: Zone of frequently asked questions, a project in which the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Idensitat, Sala d’Art Jove and Hangar open up a space for dialogue through a programme of exhibitions, interventions in the public space, activities, debates and other devices combining work by a number of different artists, theorists, cultural managers and activists.
